The Texans are steady at quarterback with Matt Schaub, but Sheehan should have a chance to compete for a roster spot, as the only other two quarterbacks on the roster are John David Booty and Dan Orlovsky.
Sheehan had been courted by his hometown Cincinnati Bengals before the draft.
Although Barnes was expected to be drafted in the later rounds of this weekend's NFL Draft, latching on to his hometown team will likely still please him.
The Bears invited Barnes for a pre-draft workout and were interested in him at that point. But, the team's lack of late-round draft picks did not allow them to draft him.
1. Intensity: Coach Dave Clawson said he was pleased with the team's intensity during the scrimmage.
"Our guys maintained a pretty good intensity level for as long as we went," Clawson said. "We probably ran close to 110, 120 plays."
He did later say that there were some concerns on offense (mainly dropped passes and bouncers thrown by the quarterbacks) that need improvement to match the intensity level.
2. Victory formation: You know you have a winning coach on your hands when you hear this coming from the field when the team is in victory formation at the end of a drill.
"We may have won the game but we're still going to practice this."
That is what Clawson said after the two players protecting the quarterback did not do a good job.
3. Kicking: Field goals were not friendly to the kickers at the end of practice.
Jerry Phillips hit all or most of his, while Matt Oczypok and Stephen Stein struggled, each only getting one through the uprights. Two kicks didn't even make it past the offensive line.
1. Bart Tanski: The former Mr. Ohio and quarterback has been switched to wide receiver. He made a one-handed catch in the corner of the end zone during practice. As far as I could see, he got his feet inbounds.
2. Chris Scheidt: One of the up-and-coming receivers on the team, Scheidt made a nice one-handed catch in the open field for what would have been a first down.
3. Tyrone Pronty: Coach Dave Clawson fully expects Pronty to be given a medical redshirt for the 2009 season and a fifth season of eligibility.
4. Calvin Wiley: Clawson is not sure if Wiley will be awarded a sixth year of eligibility, but he does expect him to. This is because Wiley has basically missed two seasons with injury during his career.
5. Quarterbacks: Clawson is still not sure which player has the edge in the quarterback battle. He did say that by the end of spring he hopes to have his top two figured out.
6. DeMark Jenkins: Jenkins will remain a tight end this season.
No. 1 offense (note these players can change at any time with the number of positional battles that are ongoing):
QB: All four contenders are receiving equal reps with the first team
RB: Willie Geter
WR1: Adrian Hodges
WR2: Kamar Jordan
WR3: Several players rotating reps
TE: Nick Rieke
OL: Blaec Walker
OL: Scott Lewis
OL: Ben Bojicic
OL: Chip Robinson
OL: Tyler Donahue
Freddie Barnes and 14 other former Falcons participated in the team's 2010 pro day this afternoon.
There were 14 teams that sent scouts to Bowling Green, and those teams included the Atlanta Falcons, Baltimore Ravens, Cincinnati Bengals, Cleveland Browns, Detroit Lions, Indianapolis Colts, Kansas City Chiefs, Miami Dolphins, New York Giants, Pittsburgh Steelers and Washington Redskins.
Most of, if not all, these teams were interested in looking at Barnes.
His times were not released to the media, but Barnes said he figured he ran the 40-yard dash in 4.6 or 4.7 seconds.
Quarterback Tyler Sheehan and safety P.J. Mahone were also targeted by several teams.
Former quarterback Tyler Sheehan will also be on hand.
Not only will the University be honoring two of the best football players to play at BGSU, Barnes will also receive the College Football Performance Award's 2009 Elite Wide Receiver Award.
Barnes had an NCAA-record 155 receptions for 1,770 yards and 19 touchdowns during the 2009 season and set numerous school and Humanitarian Bowl records.
Sheehan also set many school records in 2009 after posting 4,051 yards and 27 touchdowns on 373-of-575 passing. He threw just seven interceptions in 13 games.
