BGSU Athletics today released complete pricing and timeline information for the upcoming 2009-10 season of Falcon Hockey.

Including their annual exhibition opener, the Falcon icers will play host to 18 total games at the BGSU Ice Arena in 2009-10. The complete schedule is expected to be released by the Central Collegiate Hockey Association office in the coming weeks.

"Fans have asked how they can support Falcon hockey, and buying tickets to cheer on the team is perhaps the most visible and accessible way for everyone to support our team," said Director of Athletics, Greg Christopher. "We have also added the 'Falcon Assist' Ticket Donation Program for fans that want to support the team but are unable to attend games. Whether it's season tickets, a Falcon Flex Pack or buying tickets through 'Falcon Assist', there are several options for fans to cheer on BGSU Hockey."

Single-game ticket prices and group rates will remain at the same levels as the 2008-09 season across the board. Season ticket prices range from $100-$240, and will once again include tickets for a potential CCHA Playoff home series. A new Falcon Flex Pack option will also be introduced for 2009-10, and offers the ultimate in affordability and flexibility with its $96 price point and 12 Bench Reserved ticket vouchers redeemable in any combination at any regular season home game.

Yesterday the Pittsburgh Penguins officially dropped the 'Interim' tag from Dan Bylsma's title. The Bowling Green grad recently lead the Penguins to round one series win over Philadelphia Flyers. At BG Bylsma scored 86 points in 156 games before graduating in 1992 while playing on the same team as current BG coach Scott Paluch.

PITTSBURGH (AP) -When Dan Bylsma took over as interim coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins in mid-February, they were barely over .500 and nearly out of the playoff race.

One remarkable turnaround later, Bylsma earned himself a new contract and the right to drop "interim" from his job title.

The Penguins officially named Bylsma their head coach after his arrival sparked Pittsburgh to an impressive 18-3-4 record over their last 25 regular season games and a first-round playoff series win.

"I'm humbled," Bylsma said. "I'm excited. And I look forward to continuing to lead our hockey team."

Penguins general manager Ray Shero said Bylsma's work ethic, knowledge and ability to relate to the players made the contract extension an obvious move.

"He accepted the challenge of being our interim head coach in February and made this a very easy decision for our ownership and management," Shero said.

BOWLING GREEN, OHIO -- The Bowling Green State University hockey program held its annual Awards and Senior Recognition Banquet Sunday honoring the three seniors and handing out their awards for the 2008-09 season.  The event was held in Olscamp Hall on the Bowling Green campus.

Sophomore forward Dan Sexton, who recently signed a professional contract to play with the Anaheim Ducks, was the recipient of the Jim Sears Award, given to the team's most valuable player, and the Sam Cooper Trophy as the leading scorer on the team.  Sexton played in all 38 games leading the team with 17 goals and 22 assists with three of his goals game-winners to tie for the team lead.  The Apple Valley, Minn. native was among the Central Collegiate Hockey Association leaders in points (39, t-6th), goals (t-5th), assists (t-13th), power-play points (5-13--18, t-5th), short-handed goals (2, t-3rd) and game-winning goals (3, t-11th).  Nationally, his point total (1.03 point per game) was 38th.  The honorable mention All-CCHA selection last season was tied for seventh in scoring in CCHA play (28 points), tied for seventh in goals (12) and tied for 11th in assists (16).

Junior defenseman Kyle Page earned the Jack Gregory Award, given each year to the top scholar athlete on the team, the Dr. Ron Zwierlein Leadership Award and the Jim Ruehl Award as the best defensive player.  Page was BGSU's nominee for the CCHA Scholar Athlete of the Year Award carrying a 3.54 GPA in sport management.  Page, the captain of the team in 2008-09, played in all 38 games and had four goals and 10 assists to rank second on the team among defensemen in scoring.  The Wixom, Mich. native added an offensive side to his game over the last half of the season scoring 13 points (4-9) in the last 23 contests of the season after scoring only six points (0-6) in the first 87 games of his career.  Page's point total was tied for 18th among all CCHA defensemen last season.

A video has been uploaded to YouTube of the winning goal from the 1984 college hockey championship game. The goal is scored around the 1:18 mark.
With their 4-1 win over upstart Bemidji State in the semifinal, Miami will take on the No. 1 team in the country, Boston University, for the national championship in Washington. The puck drops at 7 pm, and the game will be aired live on ESPN.

Having seen Miami play in person and BU several times on television, I'm predicting the RedHawks will win their first national title in any sport. BU has lucked out that teams, such as Vermont and New Hampshire, haven't taken complete opportunity to attack the Terriers when they hit a lull in their game, which they have had in each round except for an 8-3 whooping on Ohio State.

Miami has proven they have that killer instinct to step on a team when their down, and is strong enough defensively to hold off the BU offensive monster. It also helps that freshman goalie Cody Reichard has showed a resurgence and taken over the reigns as Miami's goalie of the future during the post season.

Final prediction: 4-2 Miami wins NCAA title
Dan Sexton, Bowling Green's leading scorer this season, signed a National Hockey League contract Monday afternoon with the Anaheim Ducks.

The Apple Valley, Minn., native earned a two-way contract, which means his salary won't be finalized until it is determined where he willIMG_3055.jpg play. If he plays in the NHL, Sexton will earn $500,000, but that number would drop to $50,000 if he plays in the AHL next year.

At five feet 10 inches, Sexton's 166-pound frame isn't quite NHL-ready yet. The sophomore forward was among the CCHA scoring leaders all season, finishing with 17 goals and 22 assists in 38 games.

Sexton told the Sentinel-Tribune on Monday that the uncertain future of BGSU's hockey program did not affect his decision to jump to the pro ranks two years early.

The only remaining member of BG's "Axe Line" of 2008-09 heading into next season for the Falcons will be David Solway. Sexton and Solway teamed with senior Brandon Svendsen to account for more than 40 percent of the team's offensive output this past winter.

Svendsen signed a contract with the Idaho Steelheads of the ECHL last month and is off to a flying start with 19 points in 11 games.
I visited the BGSU hockey offices today for an update on what is happening in the world of BGSU hockey.

Senior's making the jump

-According to coach Scott Paluch, Kevin Schmidt is in Syracuse today a tryout with the Columbus Blue Jackets American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate the Crunch. Later in the day he officially signed an amateur tryout contract with the club. For the full story go here.

-Former assistant captain Brandon Svendsen has already played eight games with the Idaho Steelheads of the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL). Svendsen is having an impressive start to his professional career with 10 points already (4 goals, 6 assists). Look for a story on Svendsen's ECHL career in next week's BG News.

-Fellow senior  Jimmy Spratt has decided to stay at BGSU until the end of the school and complete his degree rather then sign immediately with Calgary's ECHL affiliate in Las Vegas (Spratt was a 2004 draft pick of the Calgary Flames).

BOWLING GREEN, OHIO - Bowling Green State University President Carol A. Cartwright announced today the outline of a plan to decide the future of the BGSU Ice Arena and to explore options facing the University's Intercollegiate Athletics Department.

According to Cartwright, a community and campus working group will be formed to explore operational, usage and facility-improvement solutions for the 43-year old Ice Arena. In addition, a national consultant in intercollegiate athletics will be retained to help BGSU map the future of its athletic program.

From the Ithaca Journal after Bemidji State's 4-1 win over Cornell.

"They deserve to be going to Frozen Four," Schafer said. "If you look at the college skyline right now, you'll see teams and presidents in tough economic times and teams like Bowling Green (who is considering eliminating its hockey program), and I think Bemidji legitimizes people who make the right decisions."

For the whole story from the Ithaca Journal go here.
While Notre Dame and Michigan received top seeds in the NCAA hockey tournament it was Miami who is headed to the Frozen Four.
