Former BG men's basketball players Otis Polk and Bob Hill are headed toward opposite sides of the country.

Polk, who recently wrapped up his Falcon career this past season as BG's all-time blocked shots leader, has signed a contract to play for the Plymouth Raiders of the British Basketball League in England.

"I'm happy for Otis," BG coach Louis Orr said. "This is a dream come true for him to be a professional basketball player. He's worked hard and he's a quality player and quality person. He has a bright future and his best years are still ahead of him."

Hill, who played for the Falcons from 1969-71, has signed a contract to become the head coach of the Tokyo Apache in the Basketball Japan League.

Hill has a lot of coaching experience, as he spent time as a coach in the NBA for four different teams.

BG men's basketball coach Louis Orr has announced the addition of two student-athletes for the 2010-11 season.

Torian Oglesby and Anthony Henderson have both signed National Letters of Intent to play for the Falcons next season.

Oglesby, a 6-foot-7 forward junior college transfer from Mott Community College, helped lead the Bears to a 26-4 overall record this past season en route to winning the MCCAA Tournament Championship.

"Torian is a quality young man from a quality program," Orr said. "Coach [Steve] Schmidt is a Hall of Fame coach and he has done a great job with him. Torian is an athletic competitor and a rugged guy who will compete hard on both ends of the court. He's a traffic rebounder and will add to our toughness around the basket. He's mobile, he runs well, and he's a high-energy guy."

BG men's basketball players Joe Jakubowski and Marc Larson have been named to the Mid-American Conference Academic All-MAC team. BG was the only school to have multiple players on the team.

Jakubowski and Larson join Buffalo's John Boyer, Northern Illinois' Xaver Silas and Western Michigan's David Kool on the five-player squad.

Larson, a senior, boasts a 3.97 grade point average in engineering technology. Jakubowski, a junior, has a 3.32 grade point average in business.
The athletic department has announced the big-name opponents who will face the Falcon volleyball and men's and women's basketball teams in the first games at the Stroh Center.

The netters will kick things off on Sept. 9, 2011 when they host Michigan State. The men's basketball squad will host their season opener on Nov. 12 against Howard, where former University president Sidney Ribeau is now in charge. Finally, the women's basketball team will begin their Stroh era against Purdue on Nov. 17.

"We are excited about opening the Stroh Center and the unique first-game opportunities for our teams and fans," athletic director Greg Christopher said in a press release. "These three games will be special and set the stage for the new home of Falcon basketball and volleyball. Two of the opponents are high-profile Big Ten teams and the Howard game is a connection to former Bowling Green President Dr. Sidney Ribeau and the important role he played in getting the Stroh Center started."

Official Blade report

Toledo men's basketball coach Gene Cross has stepped down from his position, according to a Toledo Blade report.

Gene_Cross.jpg
A 4:30 p.m. press conference at the university this afternoon is believed to have been called to make the announcement official.

Cross just finished the second year a five-year contract, but his team was a lowly 4-28 (1-15 Mid-American Conference) this season, which is the worst finish in school history.

He wasn't much better in his first season when he only won seven games.

Cross has made no indication of the move on his Twitter account as of the time of this post.

Fox Toledo's Howard Chen has been providing his commentary on the decision on his Twitter account.
No. 7 Western Michigan vs. No. 2 Central Michigan, noon

Central Michigan is the MAC West champion. But Western Michigan has a better overall record this season, the best player in the league in David Kool and one win against the Chippewas this year. When the day is done, WMU will still have a better overall record and the best player in the league, but they will also have two wins against the Chippewas.

WMU 78, CMU 70

No. 6 Eastern Michigan vs. No. 3 Akron, 2 p.m.^

Right now, there is only one team in the MAC that can beat Akron. It's not Eastern Michigan.

Akron 86, EMU 62

No. 9 Ohio vs. No. 1 Kent State, 7 p.m.

The Bobcats will give the Flashes a scare, but in the end, Kent State will still come out on top.

Kent State 81, Ohio 77

No. 5 Buffalo vs. No. 4 Miami, 9 p.m.

Miami defense vs. Buffalo offense = a good, tight matchup that ends in overtime.

The Falcon men's basketball team will get an early test next season, as they will partake in the Legends Classic.

The Legends Classic is not a typical tournament. Four teams - Syracuse, Michigan, Georgia Tech and UTEP - will be able to play for the championship.

In the first round of the tournament (Nov. 17-21) will be regional action held on the campuses of the four teams mentioned above. The Falcons will have one game in that round.

On. Nov. 26-27, the Falcons will play two second-round games (referred to as the subregional round) at either Detroit or William & Mary. Meanwhile, the four first-round hosts will play a championship bracket.

Full tournament matchups will be announced at a later date.

Other teams playing in the tournament are: Albany, Gardner-Webb, Mercer, Niagara and Western Carolina.
BG sophomore Scott Thomas was named All-MAC Honorable Mention by the league office this morning.

Scott_Thomas.jpg
Thomas has a stellar season for the Falcons, leading the team in almost every statistical category, including points (13.2) and rebounds (6.3) per game.

In the final 17 games of the season, Thomas shot 48 percent from the field and averaged 16.9 points per game.

He started all 30 games this season, emerging as a star and a leader after averaging just 13.2 minutes and 3.7 points per game as a freshman

Thomas scored 23 points in BG's first-round MAC Tournament game against Western Michigan on Sunday, but it was not enough to lead the Falcons to a win.

A former Falcon football and men's basketball star will coach a team in this year's NCAA Tournament.

Greg_Kampe.jpeg
Greg Kampe's Oakland, Mich., squad punched their ticket to the Big Dance Wednesday night after defeating IUPUI 76-64 to win the Summit League Men's Basketball Tournament.

For Kampe - who was this season's Summit League Coach of the Year - this will be his second appearance in the NCAA Tournament after his squad rallied to make an appearance in 2005. He led Oakland to appearances in the Division II tournament for four seasons from 1994-1997.

He lettered in basketball for the Falcons from 1976-1978 and was named to the Academic All-MAC team in 1978.

Kampe also played football for the Falcons from 1975-1977, serving as a punter and a defensive back.
