The Falcon men's basketball team will get an early test next season, as they will partake in the Legends Classic.

The Legends Classic is not a typical tournament. Four teams - Syracuse, Michigan, Georgia Tech and UTEP - will be able to play for the championship.

In the first round of the tournament (Nov. 17-21) will be regional action held on the campuses of the four teams mentioned above. The Falcons will have one game in that round.

On. Nov. 26-27, the Falcons will play two second-round games (referred to as the subregional round) at either Detroit or William & Mary. Meanwhile, the four first-round hosts will play a championship bracket.

Full tournament matchups will be announced at a later date.

Other teams playing in the tournament are: Albany, Gardner-Webb, Mercer, Niagara and Western Carolina.
BG sophomore Scott Thomas was named All-MAC Honorable Mention by the league office this morning.

Scott_Thomas.jpg
Thomas has a stellar season for the Falcons, leading the team in almost every statistical category, including points (13.2) and rebounds (6.3) per game.

In the final 17 games of the season, Thomas shot 48 percent from the field and averaged 16.9 points per game.

He started all 30 games this season, emerging as a star and a leader after averaging just 13.2 minutes and 3.7 points per game as a freshman

Thomas scored 23 points in BG's first-round MAC Tournament game against Western Michigan on Sunday, but it was not enough to lead the Falcons to a win.

A former Falcon football and men's basketball star will coach a team in this year's NCAA Tournament.

Greg_Kampe.jpeg
Greg Kampe's Oakland, Mich., squad punched their ticket to the Big Dance Wednesday night after defeating IUPUI 76-64 to win the Summit League Men's Basketball Tournament.

For Kampe - who was this season's Summit League Coach of the Year - this will be his second appearance in the NCAA Tournament after his squad rallied to make an appearance in 2005. He led Oakland to appearances in the Division II tournament for four seasons from 1994-1997.

He lettered in basketball for the Falcons from 1976-1978 and was named to the Academic All-MAC team in 1978.

Kampe also played football for the Falcons from 1975-1977, serving as a punter and a defensive back.
Obviously since we are a college publication we don't get any say in the Mid-American Conference postseason awards for any sport.

But if I did have a ballot for the men's and women's three biggest postseason awards, here is what it would have looked like.

Men's Player of the Year
*David Kool, Western Michigan

Kool was easily the best all-around player in the MAC this season. He led the league in scoring and came through in the clutch when his team needed him most, as the Falcons learned first-hand in the first-round of the MAC Tournament.

Men's Coach of the Year
*Geno Ford, Kent State

Had the Flashes not won the regular-season finale against Akron to win the MAC title, Ford would not have won this award for real nor would he appear on my ballot. It would have been Akron's Keith Dambrot instead. Miami's Charlie Coles is also a viable option here because he turned his team around quite well, but he didn't factor into the real balloting or my own.

Men's Freshman of the Year
*D.J. Cooper, Ohio

Cooper led all rookies in scoring, assists and rebounding. In addition, he led the league in steals per game. Clearly the best rookie this season, Cooper likely will have a Player of the Year award in his trophy case before his career is finished.

The Mid-American Conference announced the rest of the 2009-10 men's basketball awards Tuesday morning.

Freshman of the Year - D.J. Cooper, Ohio
Sixth Player of the Year - Anthony Simpson, Kent State
Defensive Player of the Year - Jimmy Conyers, Akron
Any serious Falcon men's basketball fan is familiar with the year 1968, as that is the last year BG appeared in the NCAA Tournament.

Bill_Fitch.jpg
Coached by the legendary Bill Fitch, the 1967-68 club finished 18-7 (10-2 Mid-American Conference) and narrowly lost to Marquette in Kent during the first-round of the NCAA Tournament on New Year's Day.

The 1967-68 squad's defining win was an 85-76 victory against Toledo. They also won at Syracuse 87-81 and beat Virginia 76-72 in the Marshall Tournament. However, both schools were sub-.500 that season.

But most importantly, the Falcons won the MAC championship, which earned them an automatic bid the Big Dance.

Led by Walt Piatkowski's 27 points, the Falcons fought back from a 39-34 halftime deficit but were unable to stop George Thompson - who had a double-double with 33 points and 10 rebounds - and Marquette, which squeaked by with a 72-71 win.

Captain Al Hairston (18) and Carl Assenheimer (10) were the only other Falcons to score in double-digits. Al Dixon led the team with 10 rebounds.

And that was it.
Western Michigan senior David Kool was named the Mid-American Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Year and Kent State coach Geno Ford was named MAC Coach of the Year this morning by the league.

David_Kool.jpg
Kool led the MAC in scoring this season with 21.9 points per conference game for the seventh-seeded Broncos, who will face second-seeded Central Michigan in second-round MAC Tournament action at noon on Thursday.

This season, Kool moved into first place on Western Michigan's all-time scoring list (2.037 points). His total also ranks 10th all-time in the history of the MAC.

"It is a very special feeling to be MAC Player of the Year," Kool said. "It's a great honor, and I couldn't do without the help of my teammates and the coaches. This is more than an individual award, it's a credit to everyone in our program. It's a complete honor, and I'm very humbled."
UPDATE: 6:05 p.m.

Scott Thomas' 23 points and the Falcons' 59.2 percent shooting effort was not enough today, as Western Michigan downed BG 75-73 in the first-round of the Mid-American Conference Tournament.

Scott_Thomas.jpg
In a back-and-forth game that did not see either team lead by more than five points during the second half, the seventh-seeded Broncos were able to come out on top after a strong second half by senior David Kool, who scored 15 of his 20 points in the second half.

Tenth-seeded BG held an early 8-0 lead, but a 10-4 WMU run cut that lead midway through the first half. But the Falcons would follow that with a 13-5 run of their own to take a 25-15 lead, the largest of the game.

The Broncos fought back the rest of the half, cutting the lead to one at halftime, 39-38.

Both teams seemed to trade baskets for the rest of the game, as Thomas and Kool took over most the scoring before the Broncos slowly pulled away in the final five minutes of the game.
All games are Sunday at 2 p.m.

No. 11 Northern Illinois (6-10) at No. 5 Eastern Michigan (8-8)

NIU has several individual talents, but the team was never able to put it together consistently this season. EMU is no star-powered team either, but they will come out on top in a close matchup.

EMU 72, NIU 69

No. 9 Ohio (7-9) at No. 8 Ball State (8-8)

Ohio is a surging team that might actually do some damage in this tournament. Not really sure I would call a first-round Bobcat win an upset, but you get the idea.

Ohio 76, Ball State 62
