The top ranked rugby team in Division I, according to Rugby
Magazine, will play its first match of the season this weekend against one of
its toughest opponents of the year.

BG will be facing none other than BG - although the BG team
they are facing is a little bit older and most of its players are retired from
the game.

This Saturday will be the 42nd annual BG Rugby Alumni
Game. The match is usually one of the team's toughest and most competitive matches
of the season that the Falcons play. The Alumni team features many of the
club's past All-Americans, and standouts from year's past.

Thegame is considered an exhibition and has no effect on
the team's record. Given that, the match is a good test for the club early in
the season. It allows the coaches to see different players, work on different
strategies, and gauge where the team isat before beginning the season.

Figuring out who is playing where and filling in holes that
are left from last year's departures are on top of the list early in the
season. Despite the team's missing parts, they are returning some of the top
players in the Midwest including All-American's Rocco Mauer and Nick Viviani.

The game is set for 12 p.m. at the rugby pitch off of East
Poe Road and North College Drive just outside of campus.

"Our non-conference games will give us opportunities to grow and compete at a high level and help prepare us for the MAC season. The season is a marathon and we need to grind out one game at a time."

The Falcons' non-conference schedule is highlighted by a game at Michigan State, aTom Izzo team that reached the Final Four a year ago. BG hosts six non-conference games this season, including Isiah Thomas' Florida International team.

The Falcons will also play at Michigan in the Legends Classic, followed by three games over the Thanskgiving holiday at the University of Detroit.

BG will open the MAC portion of its season on Jan. 8 at Buffalo and will remain on the road until Jan. 16, when they host their first conference game of the season against Miami.

2010-11 BGSU Men's Basketball Schedule

As Matt Schilz continues to get the majority of the first team quarterback reps during fall camp, the timing of BG's pass-heavy offense appears to be improving, but not enough to satisfy head coach Dave Clawson.

While Clawson stopped short of declaring Schilz the starter for the Sept. 4 opener at Troy, it appears that will be the scenario.

"If we played a game tomorrow, he (Schilz) would be our starting quarterback," Clawson said. "It would take something drastic to happen for him not to be."

Schilz threw three touchdown passes in the scrimmage, but the offense committed several turnovers, much to the disappointment of Clawson. Due to this, the offense stayed after practice to condition, while the defense was allowed to go back to the locker room.

"I wouldn't say the defense won (the scrimmage)," Clawson said. "We only condition when we do things to beat ourselves, and there was a lot of the on offense today.

"They just needed a gentle reminder."

Schilz's first touchdown pass came on a great catch by Kamar Jorden on a jump ball in the end zone.

He threw another to cap off a two-minute drill, and his third came on a slant to Shaun Joplin, who made several defenders miss after the catch to score.

The first part of the scrimmage was run like an actual game, with the first, second and third teams all getting reps.

When the first punting situation occurred, the team punted four times. The second punt was a fake, which gained big yards.

On the third punt, the snap sailed over Jerry Phillips, who then lackadaisically ran after the ball, which caused Clawson to chew him out. On the next play, Phillips' boomed a 50-plus yard punt.

The second part of the scrimmage was practicing situations, including the two-minute drill, and the offense running plays from their own one-yard line.

The offense scored on one of the two-minute drills, the one piloted by Schilz, but failed to score on the others.

On the first play run from the one-yard line, Erique Geiger broke off a 52-yard run.

The defense played exceptionally for the most part, causing multiple turnovers and recording several sacks.

Lane Robilotto stood out on defense, intercepting two passes.

Notes: Justice Jones and Tyrone Pronty were both held out of practice with what was called mild ankle injuries...Jordan Hopgood and Geiger, who are competing for the backup running back position behind Willie Geter, both played injured today, according to Clawson. Hopgood has a mild knee injury, while Geiger is also battling an ankle sprain.

Editors note: Will be updated as soon as possible and as long as we have Internet access in the stadium.

2:30 p.m. Yesterday, Willie Geter told me that the offense was going to try and "Put the defense in the dirt." We'll see what happens when the competition starts in a couple minutes, so far the only action is the special teams unit practicing punts and short field goals while other players are warming up with their position coaches.

3:05 p.m. After a long time warming up, Bryan Wright kicks off to start the scrimmage, Matt Schilz and the offense take over at the 30-yard line. First couple plays for the offense go smoothly, as they pick up 3-to-4 yards on three straight plays.

3:16 p.m. Schilz and the offense drives stalls after fumble by the sideline, after a couple plays Aaron Pankratz takes over at quarterback.

3:25 p.m. Pankratz first series comes to an end with a sack on third down, Robbie Goble gets the sack. Jerry Phillips into punt, his first couple punts are short but his fourth one booms around 53 yards.

3:35 p.m. Schillz leads the first touchdown drive of the day, ending with a great 18-yard touchdown catch by Kamar Jordan. Bryan Wright hits the extra point, Schilz has now beed out there for 4-of-5 drives.

3:40 p.m. I believe it's Pankratz's, but could have been Pagel's, pass is intercepted by Lane Robilito after it isn't held by the intended receiver.

3:48 p.m. Bryan Wright hit a 30-yard field goal with ease, the offense had been as close as the 2-yard line, however two stops and a sack knock the offense away from the end zone.

4:00 p.m. Witht the ball on the goal line, Erique Geiger takes the hand off and breaks away for a 52-yard pick up.

4:11 p.m. Tyler Beck takes a pass from Schilz and escapes for a 19=yard touchdown reception. Nice downfield blocking by the wide receivers.

4:15 p.m. Offense picks up another touchdown, this time Shaun Joplin takes a pass over the middle and beats two defenders for a 22-yard touchdown.

4:18 p.m. That will do it for us for now, follow the remainder of the scrimmage at www.twitter.com/bgnewssports and come back later this evening for more including a full recap.

We're back on campus and our in-depth coverage of the 2010 football season will begin today with a report from today's practice.

-Depth chart starting to figure itself out: Coach Dave Clawson said with the second week of camp the depth chart has started to hammer itself out. The biggest question entering camp was who will start at quarterback at Troy on September 4. As of now it looks like that will be redshirt-freshman Matt Schilz (who will be wearing No. 7 this year), with the No. 2 spot still and open battle.

At running back, Willie Geter will still get the bulk of the carries, however the No. 2 job is now a battle between Erique Geiger and Jordan Hopgood, a converted wide receiver.

Clawson was also high on the added depth at tight end this year, noting that Nick Rieke, Tyler Beck and Alex Bayer have all played well throughout camp.

-New kicker: After the kicking game struggled at times last season, BG has improved thanks to Michigan transfer Bryan Wright. Wright, a graduate student who transferred since Michigan didn't have his intended program, handled kick-offs for the Wolverines last season and showed some leg at practice today easily hitting a couple 45-plus yard field goals.

Wright will handle the place kicking and kick-offs, while he and Jerry Phillips are still competing for the punter job.

-Split practices: During camp the freshman and veteran players have been split up into two overlapping sessions. While it makes for a longer day for the coaches, more players are getting added repetitions.

-Scrimmage tomorrow: The second scrimmage will take place tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. follow the BG News Sports staff on Twitter for updates during the game at twitter.com/bgnewssports

Buff spent eight seasons with the Falcons, stepping down to accept a position with TYR, a swimwear manufacturing company.

"I have had an incredible experience at BG," Buff said. "I feel so fortunate to have worked with such an amazing group of women over the past eight years. They have been a part of my family and I will miss them dearly."
