THE GAME: BG vs. Wayne State, 1 p.m. in Anderson Arena for the season opener for both clubs.
WHAT'S AT STAKE: There's not much is at stake for either team this afternoon. If Wayne State wins, it will be quite the upset in their book, and as a veteran team (two seniors, two juniors and a sophomore starting), it's not totally out of the question. BG will learn a lot about themselves in this rebuilding year. This game will be used to see how the players play off each other considering they are down four players who started at times last season.
BG IS RELYING ON: Their bigs. Seniors Otis Polk, Erik Marschall and Marc Larson give the Falcons three players taller than 6-foot-7, and utilizing them effectively is a key to this season not becoming a wash. Polk said he plans to be the best man in the conference, but Larson is coming off knee surgery and Marschall has also had injury problems throughout his career so they will have to be at their best when they are on the floor in place of Polk.
WSU IS RELYING ON:
Their two star sophomores. While Wayne State has plenty of viable veterans on the floor, their two most dynamic players are sophomores. Returner Dale Brundage and transfer Ike Udanoh impressed during a scrimmage against Michigan. Udanoh came off the bench, but he will give the Warriors someone to look to when BG puts in their younger, inexperienced players.
LAST TIME: The Falcons defeated Wayne State 80-48 last season.
