DETROIT -- While it's still over a month away from the Falcons' season opening game against Troy on Sept. 4, BG coach Dave Clawson already passed his first test after Mid-American Conference Media Day at Ford Field Friday.

While Clawson and his players at media day seniors Tyler Sheehan and Jahmal Brown- had strong feelings for the upcoming season, the media felt otherwise as BG was picked to finish fifth in the MAC East.

"Coming into this season we have pretty high expectations and we feel that we have a lot of talent," Brown said. "We also feel that we have the talent we need to get a lot of things accomplished this season."

Those high expectations can be attributed to Clawson's willingness to combine some of both the old and new system for his returning players.

"The one thing we did before we really installed our offense was look at what Bowling Green did last year," Clawson said.  "We looked at film from all the offense games and the players, and we wanted to make sure we we're putting our guys in a position to be successful."

Clawson's offense will get it's first major test against Troy, but until then, the new coach is taking things one step at the time with the first goal being a 1-0 football team in September.

He also downplayed that the Troy game would be the opening of a new era of any sort and spoke about how it's Falcon Football, not Clawson football.

That team first attitude has really helped Clawson's transition into the program, according to his starting quarterback.

"He's really opened up with a lot of guys, and he's won a lot of people over," Sheehan said.

The question also came up about position battles this fall, including who would fill the role as kicker.

Most likely the job will come down to who performs better between freshmen Jerry Phillips and Matt Oczpok.

"That job is as open as any position on our team, we're going to put those guys under the gun in practice and put them in pressure situations. We're gonna chart every kick and whoever kicks the best will be lining up for us against Troy," Clawson said.
