But before we get to the practice report, here's what to watch for the rest of the week:
*This evening: Photo slideshow
*Tomorrow: News and notes from Dave Clawson in the print edition of The BG News
*Friday: Practice report (assuming good Friday weather)
*Friday: Highlight video (assuming good Friday weather)
*Monday: Running back story in the print edition of The BG News (assuming good Friday weather)
Here's today report:
The wind was whipping this afternoon at the practice fields outside of Doyt Perry Stadium. The winds were forecasted at 25 to 35 MPH, and they were every bit of that and maybe more.
The team is still doing a lot of drills so there wasn't too much action, but there were a few things worth noting.
GIVE ME 20: In the middle of the field, coach Dave Clawson set up some markers and the team practiced screen passes in goal line situations.
The markers indicated the goal line and out of bounds. A running back would take a screen pass and try to evade the defense to "score a touchdown."
And it wasn't even a contest.
The defense made 25 stops compared to the offense's nine touchdowns. The punishment for losing was 20 up and downs for all the offensive players in the drill.
9-ON-9: Later on, the first and second teams played a short 9-on-9 scrimmage designed for the running backs. I marked down the first 10 plays from this exercise.
*Play 1: Willie Geter had a short rush that would've gone for a yard or two in a game
*Play 2: Chris Bullock would have been swallowed whole by the defense for a loss or no gain
*Play 3: Geter had a nice rush that may have gone for a first down in a game
*Play 4: Geter went up the middle for what would have been a short gain
*Play 5: Bullock stalled by the defense behind the line in a beautiful defensive display
*Play 6: Bullock had a nice stiff arm against the defender for a short gain
*Play 7: Bullock again stopped in the backfield promtping a coach (I believe the very energetic offensive line coach John McDonell) to ask, "What the hell was that?"
*Play 8: Freshman Steve Dunlapwas stuffed for no gain
*Play 9: Dunlap had maybe a yard or two gain
*Play 10: Dunlap broke a tackle that would've been made in a game but had a decent run out of it
On a completely unrelated note, shortly after the 9-on-9, a semitruck passed on I-75 with a Pittsburgh Steelers logo on the trailer and tractor. It was quite odd.
EVERYTHING ELSE: The team had another scrimmage at the end of practice. There were some fumbles and interceptions but also some long passes and nice rushes.
Toward the end, P.J. Mahone's facemask was became crooked and he was riled up about that.
Meanwhile, Roger Wililams had to do 20 pushups after dropping an interception in the secondary. Earlier, he had what would have been sack on a corner blitz.
Andrew Beam had a dropped snap that would've ended in a loss during the game, but since it was practice, he was able to recover and bomb one out deep to Ray Hutson.
Look for another football pratice report Friday and continued to check back in the weeks leading up to the April 25 Spring Game.
